My Favourite Lego Games

When many people think of Lego games, most would say they are for children, and in many ways that would be true. However, these multitude of games easily appeal to older audiences as well. They bring people back to their childhood, offering nostalgia of simpler times when our imagination and creativity could flourish. Lego games are infused with youthful naivety, charm and humour that anyone can appreciate and enjoy, they are great games to unwind and turn your brain off to play. I love Lego Games, partly for these reasons and also as they fulfil childhood experiences that I never had, as Lego wasn’t a substantial part of my early life. This list will go over my favourite entries in the plethora of titles, and I hope some of these games have maybe stuck with you for similar reasons.

6. Lego Batman 2: DC Heroes

This was one of, if not the first Lego games to feature an open world hub area, and it was definitely a good first impression. It was also the first Lego game to feature voiced dialogue as well, a divisive change where I see both sides of the argument. The charm of the earlier Lego games was the humorous mumbling and exaggerated ways of communication between the characters. The games from this point on lost this defining feature, however, it wasn’t as big of a loss to be a real detriment to the series. This game was fun, had a unique story and remains a defining entry in the long running series.

5. Lego Indiana Jones

I am a huge fan of these films and the game was a brilliant recapturing of the wonder and heart of the stories and characters. Hearing the iconic theme at so many intervals never ceased to bring a smile to my face. While puzzles and environments lack the visual flare of the modern entries, I find this benefits the game more, the simplicity suits the style and design better, whereas later games visual design can be over the top and unnecessary. Reliving memorable scenes from the films (The Last Crusade being my personal favourite) in a cute Lego form is always a delight and any Indiana Jones fan will love this.

4. Lego Lord of the Rings

This will be a recurring theme in this list, but the Lego games have always been there most intriguing when recreating a film series. I will also say that I am a fan of all the films on this list the Lego games are recreating. Roaming across an open world version of Middle-Earth, completing fetch quests for humans, elves and even orcs provides a hilarious contrast to the books and films. Its open world systems were changing and being refined and the world was surprisingly large for a Lego game. Level design was great, alterations to the narrative to fit a game were well thought out and designed. This was a strong recreation and interpretation of the beloved film series.

3. Lego City

The Lego games are mainly known for their spin and recreation of films and other franchises, so to see a completely new and original story and world was such a fresh experience and the game was a brilliant addition to the franchise. It is often described as a “kids GTA”, (although so many kids still play GTA its absurd) and there couldn’t be a better metaphor to compare it. The difference, instead of playing the criminal, you play the cop catching the criminals. The open world is large in scope for a Lego game and has a large variety of terrain to explore. The story is simple yet well executed, littered with witty and juvenile humour we have come to love. For me, it remains their most bold and ambitious game and is a true joy to play through.

2. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga

The games that really did start it all. I have many fond memories of playing co-op with my brothers through the various iconic moments of the films. The Cantina music playing between levels, flipping like crazy as Yoda, deflecting blaster fire with the lightsabres, everything about this game was thrilling when I was younger. Even today, playing through it still brings nostalgia and so much enjoyment. It is the simplest game in the series, from puzzles and level design, but that’s what made it such great and charming game to play. It was going to take a special game to knock it from my top spot but the next game is equally brilliant yet edges above.

1. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and 5-7

Anyone that knows me, particularly my family, will know how much of a Harry Potter fan I am. I’ve read the books 5 or 6 times and the films many more. I know so much about the series that people refuse to play Harry Potter trivial pursuit with me as I knew practically every question. When I knew there was going to be a Lego game of it, I was so excited and I got them for Christmas after each release. I was captivated and mesmerized by the music playing and the faithful recreation of Hogwarts I could explore. It captured perfectly the magic of the beloved series and I loved every single minute of it. The modern Lego Games have mostly lost the charm and draw that entries like Lego Harry Potter have, this is mostly due to series fatigue for me, but they still continue to provide fun and excitement for new generations.
