20 Days of Video Game Characters: Day 2 – Ellie (The Last of Us)

The developers Naughty Dog are one of the finest today, creating engaging narratives and some of the most memorable and three-dimensional characters in gaming. The Last of Us, released back in 2013 to universal acclaim, once again continued this trend. You follow the journey of Joel and Ellie as they try to find the Fireflies, a rebel group trying to work on a cure to the fungal virus plaguing the world.

While Joel is an equally interesting character full of depth, Ellie stood out much more for me for a few reasons. First of all, she’s a teenage girl that has to deal with the horrifying circumstances that she finds herself in. Yet despite these many difficult situations, she still stays optimistic and finds the strength to carry on. Furthermore, she has a great sense of humour, often providing hilarious moments for the player, breaking up tense and scary moments.

Ellie (The Last of Us)

Witnessing her grow throughout the game is great to see, particularly the developing father-daughter like relationship between her and Joel. She is greatly relatable, starting off with a youthful naivety and humour, but developing into a mature and capable individual by the end of the story. This is highlighted in a later section of the game where Ellie must cope on her own. If you play the DLC Left Behind, we get to see Ellie’s past explored and the harrowing moments that she went through, further developing her as a standout and engaging individual.

If you haven’t played The Last of Us yet, I thoroughly recommend it. Even if you are not someone that likes horror, or scary games, you might be surprised by how much you’d enjoy it. I’m a wimp when it comes to horror games, yet I was hooked playing this. Ellie and Joel are both brilliant, but the former stands out so much.

    1. I didn’t know if I’d like the game because it’s partly horror, but I love good stories and characters. After playing it, it quickly became one of my favourites in the last decade.
