20 Days of Video Game Characters: Day 4 – Nathan Drake (Uncharted)

Yet another character from a Naughty Dog franchise on this list, this time Nathan Drake from Uncharted. It is one of my favourite video game franchises of all time, mainly due to its brilliant characters, fun yet meaningful stories that contain many relatable themes and concepts. These globe-trotting adventures contain so many iconic moments and aspects that have captured the hearts and minds of gamers over its 5 entries. However, the franchise wouldn’t be what it was without the main protagonist, Nathan Drake.

The charming, adventurous, comic guy who’s loyal to his friends and family is impossible to not become attached to throughout the different adventures. He is not some superhuman with a range of powers, he is just a regular guy that gets himself into various sticky situations. We as the player don’t just feel obligated to make sure he succeeds, we genuinely want to see him survive and see where his story goes because of his happy-go-lucky personality and likeable characteristics. He makes the best of bad situations, never gives up and stays true to himself and his goals in life, despite it not always playing out in the right or good way.

Watching him develop as a person from Drake’s Fortune right up till the end of A Thief’s End is engrossing to witness. His character arc is relatable and ends in such a poignant way the genuinely brought a tear to my eye. However, it is not just how he holds himself alone which makes him so great, but the relationships between him and those around him, such as Elena, Chloe, Sully etc. All of these characters and how they play off one another helps to grow that sense of relatability and in making the player become invested in the story.

Nathan Drake, right from his first appearance to his final moments has made him one of the most iconic video game characters ever. He may just appear as a humorous adventurer at first, but he grows and develops into a brilliantly fleshed out character with layers of depth and nuance. He may not be the only one to make this list.

  1. When I bought my PS4 almost two years ago, these were the first games I played. I have Uncharted #4 on my shelf waiting to be played though I have played the first three. I think my favorite from what I played was Uncharted #2.
