I absolutely adore the Professor Layton games. From the charming art style and music, to the plethora of mind-numbing puzzles the series is known for, they are truly memorable adventures. They are the type of game everyone can enjoy and the stories are always carefully put together with interesting plots. There is nothing better than solving a few puzzles in bed before going to sleep. The series would never have been what it was had it not been for the iconic top hat wearing gentlemen himself, Hershel Layton.
Layton is such an iconic character from the Nintendo franchise. He is incredibly intelligent, with his calming voice and kind demeanour, he always thinks outside the box and ready to lend a hand to help out a passerby. Throughout the games, we see him and his ‘apprentice’ Luke solve various mystery’s around the globe, from the legendary Pandora’s box, to a supposed time machine. His patience and great ability to solve even the most ludicrous and seemingly impossible puzzles is simply the tip of the iceberg as to what makes him so brilliant.

He is also a fiercely loyal friend and the almost fatherly relationship with Luke is great to witness develop. He is always there to protect Luke and help him along when he needs to, however, Layton always gives him the space and opportunities to grow and prove himself as capable. Furthermore, in the later games we get to see more backstory that helps to provide context to why he is the person he is. We learn that his love of Archaeology was a result of his friendship with Randall and the tragedy that apparently ensued. We also learn of the issues of his early childhood that shaped his future character. By the end of his final appearance in the series (hopefully he returns), we have seen him develop into quite a complex character that will remain a favourite of mine for a long time.
